1. Investment in UP Alumni

As we approach the second quarter of 2008, the expectations and determination that are symbolised by the centenary flame that will burn at the University of Pretoria's main entrance throughout this centenary year are still strong and warm. In his centenary message, Prof Calie Pistorius, Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria, stated that: “During the centenary year, the University will make a special effort to build relations with its alumni.”

In support of celebrating a century in the service of knowledge, Continuing Education at University of Pretoria Trust (CE at UP) optimised this opportunity to employ six recently graduated alumni from UP as trainee coordinators in an effort to give them real life work experience and in-service training.

This position offers tremendous growth opportunities for the trainees.  Deon Herbst, CEO of CE at UP says that people energy management with more emphasis on the development of positive and motivated staff in a healthy environment, generates human energy with the outcomes - precision business and customer service excellence. “By stimulating human energy, organisational energy will develop and grow towards complimenting and optimising the organisational outputs”, he states with emphasising the importance of personnel support and opportunities for personal development of new employees.

Since the inception of CE at UP in 2000, it has developed from seven staff members to 81 full-time employees. The seven initial staff members are still in the service of the campus entity.

2. Certificate Ceremony for Developing Leaders

Delegates from the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) were recently awarded for their successful completion of the challenging Executive Leadership Management Development Programme (ELMDP). This year-long programme was presented by the School of Public Management and Administration (SPMA) of the University of Pretoria in collaboration with Continuing Education at University of Pretoria Trust (CE at UP).

The certificate ceremony – hosted at the Musaion on the Hatfield Campus – was held on 14 March 2008.
Prof Jerry O Kuye, Director of the SMPA, stated in his closure that the ELMDP was designed to address the democratic requirements of the South African state, which form the basis of every policy, administrative structure and management practice. “Particular attention has been paid in the course content to obtain cooperation amongst politicians and officials in their deliberations, decisions and actions to promote good governance”, he said. Prof Kuye concluded by emphasising that the joint commitment of the University of Pretoria, the SMPA, CE at UP and the participants are prerequisites for effective training and learning. He encouraged the delegates to make use of this opportunity and to contribute to good governance.

The prize was awarded for translation into Afrikaans of literary work from any other language. Criteria for the awarded prize included the respect owned by the translated work in its own literature environment and the accuracy and general success of the translation.
