Taking Women Empowerment to Heart As August was women's month and 2006 marked the 50th anniversary of the 1956 women's march, we would like to pay tribute to women. One of the focus areas concerning women is education. By strengthening women's economic capacity and enabling women to become key players in the economy, growth and development is promoted. South Africa has made some progress towards achieving gender equality in the workplace. In comparison to first world countries, South Africa rates well. Some interesting statistics on Women in Business, according to Catalyst Information Centre, include:
Despite an increase in the representivity of women on Boards and in key executive and leadership positions, women are still under-represented at these management levels. CE at UP believes in the empowerment of women. Close to 9 000 women out of a total of 16 405 delegates attended training interventions at CE at UP during 2005. CE at UP presents a course specifically tailored for women - The Women Entrepreneurship Programme (WEP). In addition, 86% of CE at UP's staff tally consists of women, while two women represent the company at management level. From a social responsibility point of view CE at UP supports the South African Women in Dialogue initiatives, co-hosting the workshops on an annual basis.

The first training intervention, a course on Monitoring and Evaluation of Health Programmes, was completed at the end of August 2006. Twenty DOH delegates from Gauteng, Limpopo, Eastern Cape, Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal attended the course. Focus on Economics, Finance, Accounting and Statistics Broadly speaking, Economics is a Social Science, and its area of study is human activity involved in meeting needs and wants. Economics is broadly divided into two main branches: Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. Closely related with Economics is Finance and Accounting. Finance studies and addresses the way in which individuals, businesses and organisations raise, allocate and use monetary resources over time. Accounting is the measurement, disclosure or provision of assurance about information that helps managers and other decision makers make resource allocation decisions.
Statistics is also essential in today's management environment and is invaluable in strategic and effective decision-making. It includes the planning. summarising and interpreting of observations. |
