Course Leader Represents UP at the Audit, Risk and Governance Africa Conference

The Second Annual Audit, Risk and Governance Africa Conference was recently held in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The Conference, which focused on the particular needs of auditors, corporate risk and governance leaders across Africa, was attended by 80 delegates from 20 African countries.

Mr Danie du Plessis, Director of the Unit for Forensic Accounting at the University of Pretoria, was invited to deliver two presentations.  "Conducting an Investigation; Getting to the Truth" focused on the key aspect of fraud investigation - to establish the truth and not to convict an individual per se. "Codes of Ethics and Conduct; Why is it not Working?" highlighted that for a number of organisations, codes of ethics and conduct, are only a paper exercise. The presentation emphasised that organisations need to get to the hearts and minds of individuals, through workshops and interactive discussion.

"Corporate governance is of critical importance to Africa, says du Plessis. "Even though the continent may face specific challenges, such as poor communication - and transport infrastructure and a lack of critical skills, African decision-makers are committed to the improvement of governance and audit strategies."

The Unit for Forensic Accounting, in cooperation with CE at UP, offers an integrated fraud examination and forensic accounting portfolio, incorporating degrees, post graduate programmes, one year certificate programmes and three day specialist short courses.

The Unit at present offers a Post Graduate Diploma in Investigative and Forensic Accounting and a Masters degree in Fraud Risk Management.
