South Africa - Truly an Entrepreneurial Nation?

Entrepreneurship is widely regarded as an integral part of the South African business culture, and particularly as an engine for job creation and economic growth. Even so, South Africa can not justly be classified as an entrepreneurial nation. According to The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor 2005 South African Report, South Africa is ranked 25th out of 35 countries with a Total Entrepreneurial Activity (TEA) Rate of 5.1%.

Professor Jurie van Vuuren, Co-ordinator of the Chair in Entrepreneurship, hosted by the Department of Business Management at the University of Pretoria, identifies three distinctive role players within the South African entrepreneurial business environment – survivalists, small business individuals and entrepreneurs. “A survivalist is a trader who sells produce merely for the sake of survival, while the small business individual is a business owner who lost his entrepreneurial flair and stagnated. Neither one of these role players generates wealth, or contributes towards job creation,” states Professor van Vuuren. “A true entrepreneur is an individual that realises an opportunity and proceeds to build a sustainable business. Entrepreneurs create opportunities, contribute towards job creation and generate wealth.”

Professor Jurie van Vuuren,

Co-ordinator of the Chair in Entrepreneurship

In comparison with other developing countries, South Africa has the lowest TEA rate. The country’s start-up businesses are second least likely to mature to a new firm stage and only 1.3% of South African businesses reach the established firm stage.

Corporate entrepreneurship is another critical focus area within the entrepreneurial business environment. “Corporate entrepreneurship must be advanced in South Africa. With the countries high failure rate of start-up businesses, corporate businesses must play their part in advancing economic growth and job creation to balance the limited contribution of start-up businesses,” says Professor van Vuuren.

The University of Pretoria offers entrepreneurs assistance through training and mentorship. The Department of Business Management, in association with Continuing Education at the University of Pretoria, currently offers a number of entrepreneurial short courses from a basic Business Plan Compilation Course through to a Programme in Advanced Entrepreneurship. Courses in Corporate Entrepreneurship and Corporate Venturing promote entrepreneurial growth and assist in creating new ventures within established businesses.

The University of Pretoria is now a PGA accredited provider of education, training and coaching to all prospective golf professionals, including players, coaches and professional club managers. The University is currently the only tertiary institution in the country with this accreditation, which puts it at the forefront of golf development in South Africa.

This accreditation — combined with the facilities available from the University of Pretoria, the highperformancecentre, CE at UP and the existing Golf Academy — provides prospective golf professionals with possibly the most comprehensive, structured and internationally recognised training programme in the country.

While South Africa is keeping up with international trends, this Club Professional Golfing Programme marks the start of the country’s leadership in golf development. All students who are accepted on this programme will be required to engage in a rigorous athletic training programme. This will ensure that prospective professional golf players enjoy world-class facilities and top-notch support structures in developing their potential to the fullest. Those students who choose to rather direct their careers towards coaching, will have firsthand experience of a truly professional coaching programme.  We believe that, as a result of this practical and personal experience in athletic development, our coaches will be in a league of their own.

The first programme kicks off in February 2007 and will follow the normal academic year. Applications are invited from golf enthusiasts who have already achieved a high level of play and who have completed their matric qualification.  The programme is accredited with both the PGA and the South African Qualifications Authority. The PGA-prescribed golf apprenticeship also forms part of this comprehensive programme.

Focus on Education and Training

Education and training is concerned with workplace learning to improve performance. More specifically it encompasses the development of skills relevant to one's current occupation.

Such training can be generally categorised as "on-the-job" or "off-the-job". On-the-job describes training that is given in a normal working situation, using the actual tools, equipment, documents or materials that they will use when fully trained. On-the-job training is usually most effective for vocation work. Off-the-job training takes place away from the normal work situation. An advantage of off-the-job training is that it allows people to get away from work and totally concentrate on the training being given. This is most effective for training concepts and ideas.
