New Vice-Principal to Serve on CE at UP's Board

Prof Nthabiseng Ogude, new Vice-Principal of the University of Pretoria, has been appointed to serve on CE at UP's Board of Directors with effect from 01 May 2007.    

Prof Ogude is the first black woman to serve in this position at the University. She held other positions as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation) at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and Dean of Research at the Technikon SA.  

"South Africa needs real world-class universities that can compete at the highest level. The University of Pretoria is already among the universities that are competing at a high level and has a good reputation. In terms of continuing education we are leading the way and need to continue to focus our energy on occupying the high ground."

Prof Ogude has 26 years of experience in tertiary education. She also has extensive management and leadership experience resulting from her ten year in senior strategic, academic leadership positions.

CE at UP Supports Student Leaders of the University of Pretoria

Acknowledging the important role fulfilled by leaders in the educational environment, CE at UP recently donated R10 000 to the Student Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Pretoria. The donation will be used to buy blazers for the previously disadvantaged SRC members. 

Mr Deon Herbst, Managing Director of CE at UP  hands over the cheque to Mr Chilu Chani, Chairperson  of the SRC, with them is Prof Calie Pistorius, Vice-Chancellor and Principle of the University of Pretoria.

"As the representative body of students, it is important for us to be visible on campus, states Mr Chilu Chani, Chairperson of the SRC. "The blazers will assist in enhancing our visibility on campus. Thank you to CE at  UP for their support."

CE at UP has recently been involved in a number of trade exhibitions. The company participated in the SAPICS Conference and Exhibition, the Business and Entrepreneur Day and The Star Human Resource Development Africa Exhibition which were held in May and June 2007.  

SAPICS Conference and Exhibition

The 29th Annual SAPICS Conference and Exhibition for Supply Chain Management professionals drew to a close on the 06 June 2007. The Conference, which took place at Sun City, attracted more than 950 delegates, featured over 30 local and international speakers and more than 50 exhibitors

Exciting prizes were offered by various exhibitors. Olaf Pani of Mittal Steel from Vanderbijlpark was the lucky winner of a Certificate Course in Contract Management and a Certificate Course in Negotiation Skills. The prizes were awarded by the Unit for Supply Chain Management, University of Pretoria.  

Business and Entrepreneur Day

On the 25 and 26 May 2007, The Innovation Hub, University of Pretoria hosted a Business and Entrepreneur Day. The Hub's Business Day focused on exposing its high-tech community to a showcase of business excellence, encompassed within the Hub environment.  Entrepreneur Day was geared towards students, start-up companies and veteran Entrepreneurs and provided  an overview of the value-adding business support services offered by The Hub. 

CE at UP provided an overview of its entrepreneurial and business management short courses and year programmes , as part of the skills development and training value-add services available to companies. 

The Star Human Resource Development Africa (HRDA) Exhibition

The HRDA Exhibition took  place at Gallagher Estate, Midrand from 06 - 08 June 2007. The Exhibition offered a quality line up of speakers, products and solutions to individuals within the skills development, training and HR industries. 

"With an ever demanding and changing business environment, it is vital for individuals to put time and effort into their personal development and growth," comments Estelle Viviers, Marketing and Business Development Manager of CE at UP. "The HRDA Exhibition provides an excellent platform for individuals to talk through their career possibilities and personal development with various professionals within the field." 
 

Specialised Training Fields

Focus on Property and Construction

"The South African property industry is arguably one of the fastest-growing industries in the country," states Prof Chris Cloete, from the Department of Construction Economics, University of Pretoria. "According to statistics, the return on property investment in South Africa was the second highest in the world in 2006."  

There are a number of career avenues within the property industry of which four of the main areas of activity include administration, property management, asset management and broking.

Property and Real Estate 

  • Basic Property Programme; a three day course in property, offered in conjunction with SAPOA. It is designed for individuals who have little or no knowledge of property and may not have had the advantage of a tertiary education.

  • Property Intermediate Programme; an intensive, four day intermediate course, offered in conjunction with SAPOA. The course is designed for people in junior and middle management positions. The programme provides delegates with a more in-depth knowledge of the property industry and development.

  • Programme for the Commercial Property Practitioner (CCPP); a one-year correspondence course, presented in conjunction with SAPOA. This is South Africa's premier qualification for practitioners and brokers involved in office, retail and industry leasing, as well as selling, management and investment.

  • Property Finance; the course covers the principles and application of the financing of residential, commercial and industrial property.

  • Housing Development and Management; this two day workshop is closely aligned with "Breaking New Ground" and the new National Housing Policy.

  • Principles of Financial Reporting; this one-day programme has been specifically designed for every manager who needs to understand the principles and practical application for financial reporting and budgets as to improve their performance and their operations' performance. 

Shopping Centre Management  

  • Advanced Shopping Centre Leadership (ACSCL); presented in conjunction with the South African Council for Shopping Centres, this course is designed to enhance the managerial and business acumen of senior managers in the shopping centre industry. 

  • Shopping Centre Management (CSCM); this programme, presented in association with the South African Council for Shopping Centres, provides essential education in management and development. It provides an exceptional opportunity for delegates to master the principles of shopping centre management.

  • Fundamentals of Shopping Centre Marketing; this course will benefit marketing personnel and PRO's, or anyone involved in the marketing of shopping centres. The course covers marketing; the nature of retailing; market segmentation; shopping centre merchandise planning; customer communication; market channels; marketing budgets and the development of a strategic marketing plan.
