CE at UP Establishes its Scorecard Rating

With the approval of the revised Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) Codes of Good Practice in December 2006, CE at UP engaged Mpowered Business Solutions (MBS) to assist the company in establishing its current B-BBEE scorecard rating. MBS provides advisory services in broad-based black economic empowerment.    

CE at UP is classified as a "Specialist Enterprise" as per the Codes of Good Practice and falls within the sub-classification of Higher Education Institution and/or State Owned Enterprise. Specialist Enterprises are required to calculate their B-BBEE score on six scorecard elements, including:

  • Management Control

  • Employment Equity

  • Skills Development

  • Preferential Procurement

  • Enterprise Development

  • Socio-economic Development 

According to the status of the company as at 31 December 2006, CE at UP has a Level 5 B-BBEE Recognition Level. This enables clients to count 80% of any spend made with CE at UP as B-BBEE spend.

CE at UP Actively Supports Community through Social Responsibility Programme  

As part of CE at UP's ongoing social responsibility awareness, the company recently donated 7 computers and 2 printers to the Meetse a Bophele Primary School in Mamelodi East. With the assistance of Mr Edwin Smith, Campus Director of the University of Pretoria's Mamelodi Campus, the school and its particular need was identified.

The school employs approximately 70 educators and currently facilitates 2400 learners from Grade 1 to Grade 7. As the school can not accommodate all 2400 learners at the same time, teaching is divided into two sessions, with the younger pupils attending school in the morning and the older pupils attending from 12h00 until 16h00.

The computers will be utilised by the educators to prepare educational material. CE at UP is committed to provide ongoing support to the school in an effort to improve the circumstances of these dedicated educators and learners.

The Unit for Creative Writing at the University of Pretoria, in association with CE at UP will be presenting its first Winter School from the 02 - 06 July 2007. Presenters include well-known, award-winning authors, such as Joan Hambridge, Hans du Plessis, Henning Pieterse, Marlize Hobbs, Dolf van Niekerk and Carina Diederichs-Hugo.

The School which is suitable for beginner and advanced writers, will consist of daily lectures on, and interactive workshops in the genres of poetry and prose, drama and script writing. Delegates will have the opportunity to learn about basic and advanced tenets of various literary genres, as well as publishing and performing opportunities in these fields. Delegates' texts will be workshopped in class, while contact sessions to discuss texts with the presenting authors will be co-ordinated. 

The aim of the School is to stimulate creative input, expand existing ideas for literary texts and to improve existing texts.

CE at UP's 2006 Annual Report


We are honored to present you with our Annual Report for 2006 . Looking back, 2006 has been a year of excellence during which the company managed to establish itself as the leading university-based, continuing education entity in the country. 

CE at UP presented 968 events, trained over 20 000 delegates and issued 15 308 certificates. In comparison with 2005, delegates numbers increased by 22%. The number of issued quotations rose by 35%, with a 33% success rate achieved for accepted quotations. The company's turnover rose 41% year-on-year. 

As a stakeholder, we trust that the information contained in the annual report will provide you with the assurance that as a sustainable entity, CE at UP offers quality career-focused courses for personal and professional development. Specialised Training Fields

Focus on Veterinary Sciences

Veterinary Science is the application of medical, diagnostic and therapeutic principles to companion, domestic, exotic, wildlife and production animals. Veterinary Science has in recent years expanded exponentially because of the availability of advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for most species. Animals nowadays often receive advanced medical, dental and surgical care including injections, root canals, hip replacements, cataract extractions and pacemakers. Veterinarians assist in ensuring the quality, quantity and security of food supplies by working to maintain the health of livestock. Veterinary scientists are very important in chemical, biological and pharmacological research.

Pharmacology / Toxicology 

  • Bio-equivalence Training for Regulatory Staff; the course aims to train delegates in the study design, study conduct, pharmacokinetic analysis, statistical analysis, reporting and evaluation of bio-equivalence studies.

Veterninary and Paraveterinary Studies 

  • Veterinary Internal Medicine; a five-day course for qualified veterinarians in private practice, giving updates of current trends in different fields of veterinary internal medicine, surgery, radiology, clinical pathology and theriogenology of dogs and cats.

  • Radiology of the Horse; the course addresses the methodology and diagnostic and prognostic capabilities of radiography and radiology in the horse.

  • Radiology of the Dog and Cat; the course addresses the methodology and diagnostic and prognostic capabilities of radiography and radiology in small animals.

  • Introduction to Histotechnology - Beginners; this bench training course introduces candidates to Histotechnology and enables them to gain in-depth knowledge of the skills needed in the Histopathology Laboratory.

  • Advanced Course in Histotechnology; this course provides candidates with hands-on practical training in this specialised training section.

Veterinary Tropical Diseases 

  • Epizootic Diseases of Livestock for Animal Health Technicians; the course creates an awareness of certain of the major epidemic diseases of livestock in Africa in order to improve their surveillance, diagnosis and control.

  • Ticks; to enables delegates to identify the most important ticks of sub-Saharan Africa and acquire an understanding of their taxonomy, biology, ecology, life cycles, distribution, control and sampling methods.

  • Research Methodology for Veterinarians; the purpose of this course is to equip candidates with the ability to professionally plan and undertake a research project; collect and analyse date; understand the basic principles of clinical trail design and apply a scientific style of writing in the presentation of research. 

  • Laboratory Practice; this course will provide candidates with the knowledge required to manage a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. The emphasis during this course will be on the managerial skills and knowledge that the Head of a Laboratory will require. 

  • Selected Infectious Diseases - Companion Animals; the purpose of this course is to gain proficiency in the epidemiology diagnosis and control of important infectious diseases of companion animals.

  • Selected Infectious Diseases - Wildlife; this course provides candidates with information on the diseases of wildlife particularly at the interface with domestic animals. 

  • Molecular Biology: PCR Techniques;  the course teaches delegates the principles and applications of the PCR. 

  • Molecular Biology: DNA Sequencing; the course teaches delegates DNA sequencing techniques and their applications. 

  • Tick-borne Diseases - Ruminants; this course equips candidates with a working knowledge of the epidemiology, clinical signs, diagnosis, control and prevention of the important tick-borne disease in cattle, sheep and goats. 

Veterinary Tropical Diseases (continue)  

  • Selected Infectious Diseases - Cattle; this course assist delegates to gain proficiency in the epidemiology, clinical signs, diagnosis and control of economically important infectious diseases of cattle with special reference to transboundary disease and disease of importance at the wildlife / domestic animal interface. 

  • Community-based Animal Health: Building Communities; this course teaches delegates the importance of considering community development issues in the introduction of animal health and production projects. 

  • Community-based Animal Health: Veterinary Service Delivery; this course looks at affordable, alternative means of providing veterinary services within remote areas, while still offering the necessary disease surveillance required by national government and for international trade. 

  • Community-based Animal Health: Veterinary Communication and Extension; delegates learn about the veterinary extension methods which are important in development. In includes the transfer of knowledge and skills from technically training personnel to communities with a considerable amount of experience but little formal training.

  • Real-time PCR; this course will supply delegates with the knowledge and skills to perform a real-time PCR. 

  • Applied Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology: Introduction; on completion of this course delegates will be able to perform various basic bacteriological and mycological laboratory techniques and successfully culture and group bacteria and fungi from clinical specimens. 

  • Applied Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology: Identification of Anaerobic Bacteria; by using different techniques, the delegates should be able to culture and identify most obligate anaerobic bacteria of veterinary significance. 

  • Applied Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology: Identification of Aerobic and Facultative Anaerobes; on completion of this course, delegates should be able to culture and identify bacteria that cause disease in animals to genus, species, biotype or serotype level. 

  • Transboundary Diseases; the course involves the study of some of the major epidemic diseases of livestock in Africa in order to improve their surveillance, diagnosis and control. 

  • Tick-born Diseases: Wildlife; this course equips delegates with a working knowledge of the epidemiology, clinical signs, diagnosis, control and prevention of the important tick-borne diseases in wildlife. 

Wildlife 

  • Wildlife Immobilisation Course; this is a comprehensive hands-on course in safe and ethical methods of capturing wildlife through chemical immobilsation.
