The approval of the revised Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) Codes of Good Practice in December 2006 enabled CE at UP to engage Mpowered Business Solutions (MBS) to assist the company in establishing its current B-BBEE scorecard rating. MBS provides advisory services in broad-based black economic empowerment.

CE at UP is classified as a ‘specialist enterprise’ according to the Codes of Good Practice and falls within the sub classification of higher education institution and/or state-owned enterprise. Specialist enterprises are required to calculate their B-BBEE scores on six scorecard elements, including:

- management control

- employment equity

- skills development

- preferential procurement

- enterprise development; and

- socioeconomic development

According to the status of the entity, CE at UP has a Level 5 B-BBEE recognition level. This enables clients to count 80% of any spend made with CE at UP as B-BBEE spend.
